Mr. Basile van Havre

M.B.A, B.Sc. Mr. Basile van Havre was a Co-Chair for the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Open-Ended Working Group for a Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. He has over 31 years of experience working in Canada’s Environment Department. In addition to being Canada’s focal point on the Convention on Biological Diversity, his roles have included Director General of Biodiversity and Partnerships and Director of Population Conservation and Management at the Canadian Wildlife Service, Chair of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species’ Elephant working group and Convention on Biological Diversity Discussions on Indigenous Knowledge and Repatriation, Co-Chair of the International Joint Commission on Great Lakes Water Quality Board and Director at the Meteorological Service of Canada. He has contributed to several articles on international wildlife management and is regularly invited to lecture at Sciences Po, the University of Ottawa, Saint Mary’s University and New York University. He received the first Global Excellence Award from the Biodiversity Law and Governance Society and Canada Public service award of excellence for his leadership in the development of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2023 Canadian Public Service Excellence Award. He is now a special advisor for Biodiversity for the government of Canada and a member of the Guidance Committee of the North American Continental Assessment of biodiversity and climate change.
